Blackthorn Stables Thoroughbred Retirement

A Blackthorn Stables we have a section of our property dedicated solely to aged and retired Thoroughbreds (or other Sport or Show Horses).
We've seen an increasing issue with people culling off horses that have proved no further worth to them. But, what's most troubling is they're not paying the vet to put them to sleep. Instead they're selling them off... sometimes for under 10 dollars to a kill buyer for the horses to be destroyed in a long drawn out way.
We always attend the monthly auction in town that is held on the first Saturday of the month. We try our best to save at least one horse every week. Unfortunately we can't afford to save them all.
We offer "No Questions Asked" surrender services here. We also can arrange to pay for shipping to pick up your retired or injured horse and bring them to our facilities for their forever home. When a horse comes to us as part of this program, they do not leave. They live out the rest of their days in cozy facilities and in wonderful rolling pastures. We have smaller paddocks available for those who are unable to be turned out, and offer hand walking services as well as have a high quality horse walker to prevent legs from swelling due to inactivity. The lesson kids love these retired horses, and volunteer their time to take care of them so each horse gets personal loving care. Best of all, our barn veterinarian lives in the apartment above the barn and is completely on call.
Every horse who has worked hard for their owner deserves a peaceful and appreciative retirement. Contact us if you're interested in placing your retired horse with us, or if you know of an aged race horse in need of a good home.

The Retirement Barn Facilities
The below pictures will show you a taste of the life that these retired horses get here at Blackthorn Stables. Everything from cooshy climate controlled living space to spacious pastures with natural and man made shelter.
The Main Retirement Barn is where most of our retirees come to sleep for the night after a long day out in the sunshine.
This is one of our 30 acre pastures that our easy keepers live in. There are multiple run in shed units to protect the horses from the elements as well as the shade from these beautiful old trees.

The Stalls are 12x12 units with sliding doors and folding fronts. Here you can see the stalls are empty because our horses are out for the day!
These are the paddocks that our barn horses get turned out into daily. We have many of these, and limit pasture use to no more than 8 horses per pasture. There's a lot of space for everyone to stretch their legs!
